Sometimes, I don't think everyone understands how Jeweler in the Dishwasher really works. So, if you have a few minutes, I would like to explain the process. I own a small retail jewelry, store, I do a lot of custom design work. Depending on how intricate the piece is, custom work can get a little pricey, so I take gold as a trade in towards the bill, in most cases, this affords my customers a way to get the piece of fine jewelry that they really want.

With that being said, I took in a trade the other day, one of the pieces traded in was an old engagement ring with a small diamond center stone. I noticed that there was a lot of dirt under the diamond, and this caused the brilliance in the diamond to die. I decided to take the ring home, and clean it using my own Jeweler in the Dishwasher; this is the only way I clean my own jewelry. Even though I have all of the equipment at my jewelry shop that is necessary to clean my jewelry, I prefer using Jeweler in the Dishwasher. The vibration from an ultra sonic has always concerned me, because if any stones are loose, the vibration can cause the stone to wiggle out. Jeweler in the Dishwasher is a soaking process, there is no vibration. The pieces to be cleaned are either put in the eggs, and/or the soaker tank. I always use the soaker tank on mountings that contain any gemstones, the water is retained in the soaker tank longer than it is in the eggs. This allows for a longer soaking process, and after the piece is removed from the soaker tank, it is a speedier process to brush the residue away.

This is where people tend to get a little confused. Using Jeweler in the Dishwasher is not going to remove the dirt, it's a two part process. Jeweler in the Dishwasher loosens and softens the dirt, allowing any remaining residue to be brushed away once the jewelry is removed from the dishwasher..

After the dishwasher was finished running through all of the cycles, I took the Jeweler in the Dishwasher out of the dishwasher and looked inside the soaker tank (pictured above). I noticed that a lot of the dirt was actually gone, but there was some remaining residue.

I removed the ring from the soaker tank, took a soft bristled tooth brush, and gently brushed around the diamond while holding the ring under hot water.

Notice that the dirt is COMPLETELY gone. It took about 10-15 seconds of brushing to remove the residue, and now the area around the diamond it extremely clean. The brown looking area at the base of the prongs is tarnish, this happens when a mounting is allowed to become extremely dirty for a long period of time.

To sum things up, Jeweler in the Dishwasher is the first step in the process of cleaning fine jewelry, the second step is using a toothbrush to remove remaining residue. Sometimes, the dirt is caked on so thick, that the piece needs to be ran through the dishwasher a second time. It is a lot better for your mountings to keep them clean, it helps to prevent tarnish, Also, if there is a small pit in the mounting, and dirt is allowed to build up, it can put pressure on the area where the pit is, and will weaken the metal, resulting in a crack or a break.

I hope this explained the functionality of Jeweler in the Dishwasher, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

I can't believe that 2013 has already passed us by, but, I have to admit, I am looking to what 2014 will bring.

At Jeweler in the Dishwasher, we have our sights set on a new product that we will be introducing to our product line this year. After several requests for us to carry a product that removes tarnish from silver, I have finally come up with something that is easy to use, yet easily removes tarnish. It is an all natural, safe for the environment, product. I have included a couple of before and after pictures, to let you see for yourself, just how good the product works. All you need is a little bit of time, everything else is supplied in our product package. If you would like to be notified once the product is ready for market, please feel free to send us an email, and we will add you to our list. Look below to see the results of some of our in house testing. It's always an exciting time when we introduce a new product, and I'm really looking forward to getting this onto the market.

Why Should You Check Your Prongs?

In the directions for Jeweler in the Dishwasher, it states that you should have your prongs checked before using the product. After listening to feedback about this from several people, it has become clear to me, that most people don't seem to understand why their prongs need to be checked before using Jeweler in the Dishwasher. So, I'm going to address this.

Notice the two rings in the sketches on the left. The ring on the left has a red x next to a worn prong, and the ring on the right has a blue x next to the broken prong. When prongs become worn, like the prong next to the red x, they become sharp and start snagging on things, like blankets, towels, hair, sweaters, etc. It is this snagging that can cause the prong to pop off, like the prong next to the blue x in the picture on the right. Once the prong pops off, a larger portion of the girdle of the stone (the edge of the stone) is exposed, allowing it to be susceptible to chipping.

You will notice that all the rest of the prongs in the pictures above appear to be in good shape. However, if these were actual rings and not sketches, the prongs would all be worn about the same amount. Meaning, they are all in danger of snagging and popping off, allowing the stone to fall out of the mounting. If a stone is loose in the mounting, and is not ever tightened, it will begin to cut away at the inside of the prong. So, now you have the tips of the prongs that are very worn, along with the inside of the prongs being cut away, which is not noticeable to the naked eye. However, a jeweler can see the damage and can guide you towards the proper repair. If the prongs are worn, they can be rebuilt, and the rebuilding should last about 2-3 years. However, if there are several prongs that are worn and some that are broke, the setting should be replaced. A new setting will last around 5 years, depending on the kind of wear it receives, and whether the prongs are white or yellow gold.

If you don't have a local jeweler to check your stones, you can send them to our jewelry store and we will check the prongs. If repairs need to be made, we will contact you regarding the type of work that needs to be done, and give you an estimate for the repairs. Our shop has been in business for 40 years, and all the work is done on the premises. Contact us through our website; www.jewelerinthedishwasher.com and we will give you directions for sending in your jewelry.

So, make sure you have your prongs checked every 6 months, and do any maintenance, like stone tightening, or prong rebuilding, that needs to be done. Use Jeweler in the Dishwasher to keep your mountings clean, and your stones sparkling!!Jacque Egnatichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03302066464024231026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5974722448863852473.post-2240835859940953142013-06-05T14:09:00.000-07:002013-06-05T14:09:34.763-07:00What Happens if the Lids Come Off?I know that it sounds really crazy to you that I even SUGGEST that you place your fine jewelry in the dishwasher to be cleaned, but, it is actually the best way to clean fine jewelry at home!. Jeweler in the Dishwasher is designed to keep fine jewelry secured while in the dishwasher.

Now I will address the usual question: What happens if the lids come off while the basket is in the dishwasher?? I was initially a little surprised when I first heard this question, but I guess I shouldn't have been. I think people have had it pounded into their brains that the force of the water inside of the dishwasher is extremely turbulent. So, a lot of people assume that the water will be slamming into each egg and the soaker tank while it is in the dishwasher. I'm going to do my best to explain why this is the wrong assumption.

The outer basket acts as a locking mechanism for the eggs and the soaker tank. It is specifically designed to keep the eggs and soaker tank stable, and in the upright position. The size of the holes in the eggs and the design of the lid on the soaker tank, prohibits the water from entering the units at a high speed. Instead, the water trickles in, filling the eggs and the soaker tank, and then slowly drains out. Instead of blasting the enclosed jewelry clean, it creates a gentle soaking process; that is actually why we call it a soaker tank.

I went to great lengths to make sure that this product does not open while it is in the dishwasher. The eggs are threaded, so the only way that they can come open is if the top of the basket somehow became air-born, flew completely away from the bottom half of the basket, allowing the eggs to magically unscrew themselves, and then remove their own lids.

I believe that it is IMPOSSIBLE for this product to open while in the dishwasher if the directions are followed. But, just for the heck of it, I did a test of my own to see what would happen if I didn't follow the directions. I placed one basket in the dishwasher without the lid. I placed another basket in the dishwasher with the lid of the basket askew and I didn't secure the outer locks.

In the before picture below with the yellow eggs, you can see that the eggs are in the upright position. After I ran the cycles of the dishwasher and opened the door to see what happened, I noticed that the front egg was only slightly tilted, the back egg was still straight up. Why didn't they fall over? Because the water is entering from the top and the sides, filling each egg with water, and this keeps them in the upright position. Attaching the lid makes the whole process even more secure.

Next I placed the blue eggs in the outer basket, leaving the lid askew. I also made sure not to lock either of the heavy duty outer locks on the outer basket. I ran the dishwasher like I always do, and once the cycles were finished, I looked inside to see what happened with the lid. As you can see in the after picture, the lid is slightly askew, but it is still pretty much in the same position it was in before I ran the dishwasher. So, what does this mean? It means that if for some strange reason, BOTH outer locks become disengaged, the lid won't just blow away to oblivion; It will pretty much be right where you left it!

I guess I'll just keep posting before and after pictures, since pictures speak volumes, or a picture is worth a thousand words; depending on which cliche you would like to use. I had a customer bring in a wedding set that needed some work done; the ring was extremely dirty. So, I decided that I would just go ahead and use my Jeweler in the Dishwasher to clean the piece. It was simple; I just set the ring in the soaker tank, secured the lids, and then I set the basket on the top rack of the dishwasher. I used the detergent that I always use, and ran the cycles that I always do. When the dry cycle was completed, I took the piece out and brushed away the remaining residue. It turned out B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! I truly believe that there is no easier, safer way to clean fine jewelry at home. Okay, I'm done saying what I have to say. Take a look at the picture, see what you think.
I always learn a lot when I do these trade shows, whether it's about packaging, manufacturing, or about new products that are coming to the market. This year, I moved my booth to an area across from the inventor's corner, which was a really good place to be, because I was able to hear about several new products that were being pitched to a panel of judges for a completely unbiased, sometimes, heart wrenching review.

One of the products that caught my attention was a "new, improved" jewelry steam cleaner. One of the judges asked the inventor how she came up with the idea for the product. She said that she had received an engagement ring and wanted to keep it clean. WHAT????? That's it??? There's no experience in the jewelry industry that goes along with this product?

After all, I am a seond generation bench jeweler and I have 40 years of experience designing, repairing and manufacturing fine jewelry, and I have owned and operated my own retail jewelry store for over 15 years. It is the experience I have in the jewelry profession that led to the inception and design of Jeweler in the Dishwasher. Although customers see jewelers using a steam cleaner in their shops, it is almost always used in conjunction with an industrial ultrasonic. I believe it is a huge misconception that all you need to clean fine jewelry is a steam cleaner.

The steamer in my shop operates on 60-70 lbs. of pressure, and weighs about 50 pounds. I have seen how small the steam cleaners for home use are, and I can't imagine that they generate enough pressure to even begin to remove caked on dirt. They may remove surface residues, but that's about it.

Jeweler in the Dishwasher works just as well as an ultrasonic followed by a steamer. The degreaser in the detergent mixes with the hot water and GENTLY soaks the enclosed pieces. After removing the jewelry from the Jeweler in the Dishwasher, brush away remaining residue with a toothbrush and dry with a soft towel. Why spend $160.00 plus shipping for a steamer that won't work as well????
The above before and after picture is a ring that I cleaned using the Jeweler in the Dishwasher. I used the detergent that I always use, and I ran the cycles that I normally do, along with a full load of dishes. Once I removed the ring, I brushed under the stones with a toothbrush. Nothing else was used during this cleaning process. You can easily see the difference in the before and after picture.

The stones in the picture above, are from mountings that I have bought from customers, and then removed the stones. I placed the stones upside down when I took the pictures so that you can easily see the gunk that had been trapped behind the stones while they were in the mountings. The small yellowish stones in the lower right corner of the before picture are actually diamonds. Pretty disgusting, right? The same diamonds are in the after picture in the lower right corner.

I thought I would see what would happen if I placed loose stones in the soaker tank. Would they get clean? Would they go down the drain? The results are; YES, as you can see, they did get clean! And NO, they did not go down the drain. The Jeweler in the Dishwasher does not use a vibration process like an ultrasonic. It does not use force like a steamer. It GENTLY soaks the enclosed jewelry. The openings in the eggs and the soaker tank are so small that the water trickles in, it does NOT blast in, and then it slowly drains out. This is a very gentle process!
I have owned and operated my own small, retail jewelry store, for almost 15 years. I am the inventor of Jeweler in the Dishwasher; the safe, easy way, to clean fine jewelry with professional results.

Now, we will get into the reason for this post. Several times a year, I get customers in that have placed their jewelry in the little plastic jars that contain a jewelry cleaning solution. And, my customer's jewelry ends up having an adverse reaction to the chemicals in the jewelry cleaner. I am posting a picture of the latest mishap. These are a pair of 14k yellow gold diamond stud earrings. The chemical turned the metal a brownish color. If, she had used Jeweler in the Dishwasher, this would not have happened. Two positive things did result from this experience though. 1.) She got to buy new settings for her diamonds, 2.) I was able to sell a Jeweler in the Dishwasher!
pictures that it is really hard to photo-graph jewelry. I have tried to blow up the size of the before and after pictures of the chain and ring. Although I didn't think this ring was too dirty before I placed it in the Jeweler in the Dishwasher basket, once I removed it after cleaning, I noticed that it had more dirt in it than I initially thought. The top picture of the princess cut diamonds is the picture I took before cleaning, the bottom picture of princess cut diamonds is the after picture. If you compare the two photos, you can see the dirt in between each diamond in the top picture, if you look at the bottom picture, the dirt is all gone. I only had to brush this ring a couple of seconds to remove remaining residue.

Now look at the picture on the right, notice how ALL of the dirt is gone from this ring. I placed this ring inside the soaker tank because it has several very small stones. I ran the dishwasher cycles as I normally do, and then I removed the ring. Since there was still a lot of residue left behind (because this ring had not been cleaned for 3 years) I used a toothbrush and I poked under the center stone and behind and around the small diamonds. It took a couple minutes of brushing while running under hot water, but the ring was spotless when I was finished. It's so easy to use this product!

We recently introduced the Jeweler in the Dishwasher Basket to the market. We thought we would post some of the before and after pictures of the jewelry that was cleaned, to show how well the product works. The only thing used to clean the rings below was the Jeweler in the Dishwasher, a toothbrush, and some water. The product is an excellent method for cleaning fine jewelry.

I attended this event for the first time in 2009, and I learned a lot over the year, so I was looking forward to going back with all my new found knowledge.

I love going to the McCormick Place Convention Center, it's so big, and I think it's just really pretty inside. I had some meetings on the 5th floor, which looks out over Lake Michigan, even though it was rainy and a little foggy, it was still a really pretty view.

I met a lot of companies this year, as well as some that I had met last year. I introduced a new product that I will have on the market in the Fall of this year, and I was a bit nervous because I wasn't sure how it would be received. However, I was very happy with the initial reactions , and I'm looking forward to completing the remainder of the work in order get it on the market.

Cathy Scherzer (left) Jacque (right)Jacque Egnatichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03302066464024231026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5974722448863852473.post-68918185827305263012010-02-16T16:38:00.000-08:002010-02-16T18:25:19.450-08:00

In Response to Your Questions

Posted by: Jacque Egnatic

I would like to answer some of the questions that have been submitted to us via our website.

1) Why did I get so many zip ties in my package?

Jeweler in the Dishwasher comes packaged with 6 zip ties because once the zip tie is clipped from the rack it can't be reused. So, extra zip ties are enclosed.

2) What is the brush for?

The brush is enclosed so that any remaining residue that may be left in the ring after the cleaning process can be easily brushed away.

3.) Is the zip tie strong enough to safely hold my Jeweler in the Dishwasher in place?

Yes. The zip tie is an 18 lb. tensile zip tie, and it can EASILY hold the Jeweler in the Dishwasher, it can also withstand the heat inside the dishwasher.

4) Is it safe to put silver inside the Jeweler in the Dishwasher?

Yes, you can place silver inside the unit, but remove the jewelry BEFORE the dry cycle begins and dry the jewelry with a soft cloth.

5) How often can I clean my jewelry?

It is safe to clean your jewelry every day if you want to, although it isn't necessary. Jeweler in the dishwasher units were constructed to hang from the top rack, and if you decide to place them in the silverware basket, be sure the unit stays in an upright position. If the directions that are enclosed with each unit are followed, the unit will function properly. Be sure to place only ONE ring at a time in the unit. Also, make sure that the unit does not come in contact with the sprayer arms or the detergent dispenser.

If you have any questions regarding your Jeweler in the Dishwasher cleaning unit, PLEASE feel free to contact us!

Jacque Egnatichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03302066464024231026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5974722448863852473.post-62421502791843336972009-10-08T10:39:00.000-07:002009-10-14T12:00:43.637-07:00We Have Been Busy!!I'm not even sure where to start! I think I'll begin with the relocation of my tool. I am very excited to announce that Jeweler in the Dishwasher units are now being manufactured in the USA. Not only are they being produced in the USA, but we are now in the Heartland of the USA. This will make the logistics of shipping and receiving a lot easier for us. Prior to this move, my tool for manufacturing Jeweler in the Dishwasher was in Texas. So, I'm thrilled to have it close to home, which leads to my next bit of news.

I was able to see my tool in operation for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was very impressed with what I saw. The tool operated flawlessly and the end product was something I am very proud of. I started down this road with my idea for Jeweler in the Dishwasher, over 2 years ago, and I'm very happy with how far I have progressed. I am still working on some new products to add to our line, and I will update any progress with this newest venture on my blog.

Next on the list is the addition of some new colors to Jeweler in the Dishwasher. We now stock pink, clear, bright green and bright yellow units along with pastel green and yellow. (See the new colors below.)

Diane and I will be at the Fabulous Food Show at the I-X Convention Center in Ohio, November 13-15th. If you are in the area, check us out at booth #133. We would love to see you!

Jacque Egnatichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03302066464024231026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5974722448863852473.post-40079008086509935622009-09-12T08:17:00.000-07:002009-09-12T11:51:22.072-07:00Even I am Impressed with the Results from Jeweler in the Dishwasher!

If you have read my earlier posts, then you know that I own a retail jewelry store. And like everywhere else, people are bringing in their old gold to trade in for cash or new jewelry. A few weeks ago one of my customers brought in a very worn rope chain that belonged to her husband that she wanted to trade in for a new one. He had worn his chain every day and never took it off until it wore out. I bought the chain from her and when she left I was looking at it and realized it was EXTREMELY dirty. So, just to see what would happen, I decided to take it home and try to clean it with Jeweler in the Dishwasher (JITD). I wasn't really expecting the results to be too impressive because I was using a JITD that is intended to clean rings and chains are very hard to clean even with a professional grade ultra sonic followed by a steamer. The dirt and oils get trapped between the links and it is difficult to get it all out.

I took the chain home with me that evening, and I put it in the JITD and then attached the unit to the top rack of the dishwasher. I ran the dishwasher as I normally would, and when it was finished running through all the cycles I clipped the zip tie, and removed the unit. I couldn't believe the results!! The chain was really clean, however, since the chain was so dirty to start with, I had to use the brush enclosed with the JITD to remove the remaining residue that was between the links. The end result was the same as if I had cleaned it at work. I get asked this question quite often regarding placing jewelry in the dishwasher. I've noticed that this is the one thing that causes a lot of concern. Consumers are afraid that the hot water splashing around during the wash cycle, and the heat during the dry cycle, might be a little risky and can cause damage to the stones or metal. I am always amazed that someone asks me this, and then I have to remember that none of the people I am pitching Jeweler in the Dishwasher to have a background in repairing and manufacturing fine jewelry like I do.

I decided that this is an issue that I should address. Let me tell you what goes on during the process of sizing or repairing fine jewelry. Let's say you came to my store and you brought me a ring that needs to be one size larger. The ring you have is 14k white gold, and has a ruby in the center, with accent diamonds in the shank. When I take your ring back to my bench and am ready to size it, the first thing that I am going to do is check to see if it has ever been sized before. The way that I do this is to take the ring and dip it in a mixture of denatured alcohol and boric acid powder, and then I light it with my torch, this keeps the metal from getting a fire-coating from my torch. I will then take my torch and heat on the bottom of the ring, and see if a solder joint shows up; if one does, I will cut along this line, and if there is no seam then I will just go ahead and saw into the ring at the bottom of the shank. I will then open up the ring, insert a piece of 14k gold, and solder the the metal in place using 14k hard solder.

Next, I will place the ring on my steel mandrel and I will tap on the metal that I just soldered into the ring, to round up that area. After that, I will clean up the area where I worked. I will file the inside of the ring, then the outside, and then I will use an emery stick to take out the marks left by my file. I will then polish the ring, and when finished, I will place the ring in a commercial ultra sonic and then I will steam clean the ring. As you can tell, working on jewelry is no gentle process.

The heat from my torch far exceeds the temperatures inside your dishwasher. If you follow the directions that are enclosed with each Jeweler in the Dishwasher unit, you will not damage your jewelry.

The most important things to remember when using a Jeweler in the Dishwasher are:

Be sure you have your jewelry inspected by your jeweler to be sure all stones are secure before using Jeweler in the Dishwasher.

Read the list of stones that can withstand the heat of the dishwasher before using a Jeweler in the Dishwasher.

Make sure you have the unit completely closed and the zip tie secured correctly.

I am sure that you will be pleased with the results from using Jeweler in the Dishwasher. Most cleaners remove only surface residue, but Jeweler in the Dishwasher removes all the gunk that is caked in the crevices and around stones. The degreaser in the dishwasher detergent combined with the hot water, provides an excellent clean.

Let me give you the following as an example: Have you ever taken your car to the the car wash, put your quarters in the machine, grabbed the sprayer hose, squeezed the trigger and then sprayed your car, only to realize the water isn't hot? There is no way you will be able to clean your car by just spraying cold water on it. Just the same, dipping your rings in a cold solution is not going to remove the dirt that has built up in the mountings.

So, did this blog help to explain how safe Jeweler in the Dishwasher is? I hope so. I did some research to determine what the best way of going about this was, and found that trade shows are a fantastic resource. In January of 2008, I found the International Housewares Show, but when I checked the dates that this event took place, I realized that I didn't have enough time to jump through all the hoops that were necessary in order to attend that show. All I had at the time was a prototype, and as it turned out, it was a design that would be changed several times. I decided to make attending the 2009 show one of my goals.

In March of 2009 I attended the International Housewares + Home Show. I was a newbie in the trade show arena. Sure, I've attended trade shows, but I never paid attention to the exhibitor side of things. I quickly found that attending and exhiting are at opposite ends of the spectrum. To say the least, I was overwhelmed when I stepped into the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago, IL.

I guess I thought that a couple of people would be interested in my product, maybe ask a few questions, maybe give me a little feedback on my idea. I was not prepared for what took place. My niece, Diane (she is the one standing in the above photo) did a lot of my graphics for my booth, and has been a great help to me since this whole concept started. She attended the Housewares Show with me, and although we can now laugh about how hectic things were while we were there, it was no laughing matter at the time.

The first day of the show, we had neatly set up my product, Jeweler in the Dishwasher, and the displays for the product, as well as the brochures, samples....everything I thought we would need. We sat quietly, waiting for the first visitor to show up. I was prepared for a visitor....and then another visitor...one at a time.....I wasn't prepared for GROUPS of visitors! One buyer wanted to know the price, and when I told him what the MSRP was, he said the price was too high. The next buyer wanted to know the price, so I cut my price, but it was still too high. Then the next buyer came along, and asked my price, so I lowered it again, and then I was told that it was TOO LOW!! When the next buyer came by and asked the price, I responded with a question: "What do you want me to say? What price should I charge?" I found that if I expressed to the company representatives visiting my booth, that this was my big debut with my product, they were willing to give me a little mini-lesson in whatever issue was baffling me. My confidence was shaken a time or two, but thankfully I met some people that told me to stick with what I felt was right and don't let anyone push me around. Once I did this, I enjoyed all that went on, sadly, it took place on the last day I was there. Norman, from As Seen on TV & More was especially helpful, and I learned a lot from him. I took all that he said to heart, and I realized that if someone wasn't happy with my price, or if they questioned the sensibility of my product (without even trying it) then that was okay. There will always be people that LOVE my product, and people that don't want to try my product. I'm looking for the people that LOVE my product!

I was quite thrilled when the Director for Home Appliances and Cleaning Products at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute came by my booth. Even though I was too busy to speak with her, my niece was able to give her all the information about me and my product. Carolyn was kind enough to place Jeweler in the Dishwasher on her blog.

Jacque Egnatichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03302066464024231026noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5974722448863852473.post-42711488554758440372009-06-27T10:52:00.000-07:002009-06-27T11:13:18.697-07:00My History...

This is my first post on this blog, and hopefully you will find this and all other future posts interesting and informative. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself, and my product, and how I came up with the idea for Jeweler in the Dishwasher.

I am a second generation bench jeweler and have been in the jewelry industry for over 35 years. I began my apprenticeship at the age of 16 (now you have an idea how old I am) under the guidance of my father, John (Jack) Beasley, a well-respected and exceptionally skilled jeweler in the Kansas City area. I worked alongside my dad, two brothers, and family friends at my dad’s trade shop for several years, doing repair work and setting up inventory for several of the chain stores.

My father decided to broaden our horizons, and opened a retail jewelry store. The store, Beasley Trade Shop, appreciated a very rapid growth. However, about a year and a half after we celebrated our Grand Opening, our courier was robbed. In the robbery one of the larger companies that we serviced, had several thousand dollars of inventory stolen. And no, they never caught the individual that robbed us. Within a month of our courier being robbed, our store was held up. All of our inventory was stolen along with all the repair work that we had done for other stores. This time, we could not recover from this loss. The stores that we serviced no longer felt safe sending their work to our shop, and since we designed and manufactured our own inventory, it would take a very long time to replenish our stock.

The morning of the armed robbery I tried to call my dad to tell him what had happened (he had just retired). I felt awful, because he had worked for so many years to open his own store, and now his dreams had been taken away. And, once again, the police never found who robbed our store. This episode changed my life forever.

At the time of the robbery, I was in charge of our store, I handled the more difficult repairs, and it was up to me to make sure that all the work was done correctly, and that everything went out on time. Each day that I went to work I was terrified that I would have a gun pointed at my head again. After a month of trying to get over my fear, I decided I couldn’t take it anymore, and I told my dad that I had to quit. Without me, the shop couldn’t operate, so my dad had to close. I felt awful doing this to him, but I didn’t really have a choice. I helped my dad clean out his store, and I could see the heartbreak in his eyes. For several years I was too afraid to work in other jewelry stores, so I worked out of my house. Then I decided that I would venture out of my house. I was the in-store jeweler for several area jewelry stores, and I learned a lot from that experience. But, at the same time, I felt that I wanted to be more in control of what I was doing, and decided it was time for me to take another step in my profession. I opened my own retail jewelry store January 2, 1998. For the past 10+ years, I have owned and operated my store, waiting on customers, doing custom design and manufacturing, and any repair work that needs to be done.

Over the years I have repaired thousands of rings, designed and manufactured hundreds of rings. The thing I hear over and over again from my customers is their desire to get their fine jewelry as clean as I do. They spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on an item, but within a few weeks of wear, the stones become dull, due to the oil and dirt that has built up under and around the stones. Unlike all other jewelers, I use dishwasher detergent in my ultrasonic at work. As you know, the detergents have a degreaser along with the other cleaning agents. Therefore, I decided that this should work well when cleaning jewelry prior to and after repairing jewelry that needed repair. I found that using a dishwasher detergent works really well, and I knew that there had to be a way that I could design a product that would allow my customers to get the same kind of results. And, that is how I came up with Jeweler in the Dishwasher. It took several attempts to come up with a design that would facilitate enough water and detergent to enter the unit, and would be easy for consumers to use. I think I accomplished everything I set out to do, and I am now in the process of getting this product to the mass market.
Jacque Egnatichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03302066464024231026noreply@blogger.com0
